3 Reasons Why Everything You Know About Anxiety Is The Exact Thing Keeping You Stuck In Anxiety, Panic And Overthinking
3 Reasons Why Everything You Know About Anxiety is the Exact Thing Keeping You Stuck in Anxiety, Panic and Overthinking.
Let's look at it in more detail. You probably know that:
You know these things but it doesn't help.
- Anxiety is a common condition that many people can face and it can happen to anyone at any age.
- Anxiety is a mental health condition that is nothing to be ashamed of.
- Breathing correctly helps to calm you down when you feel anxious or you are having a panic attack
- Your thoughts create your anxiety
- You can not die from a panic attack even though it feels like you can!
Does that help you? Going by my own experience and what my clients say they have heard from other sources of support, I'd guess NO!
I would guess that even though you know these things it hasn't done anything to stop the panic attacks or overthinking.
I was prompted to write this blog today after a session with my boxing coach.
I know things about health and fitness. I know a lot of things! But all those things I knew were not helping me get that next level of change I was looking for in terms of body shape.
- I knew I was working out 4 times a week and that was helping me to stay in shape and feel mentally good
- I knew I had gained muscle strength and my back was so much better because of it
- I knew which weights to lift to achieve the results I had achieved
- I knew I had improved my diet which improved my overall health
What I didn't know was:
- Why I wasn't seeing any more changes in terms of my shape
- Which foods were impacting that (although I could take a good guess)
- I knew I needed to eat differently to see different results, but I wasn't sure what or when.
I only knew what I knew
It's Okay to Ask For Help
So I asked someone who KNEW what I DIDN'T know.
Sure I was a little nervous to ask. What if they laughed at me, what if I couldn't do what they recommended and what if I didn't WANT to do what they recommended? Was I even ready to experience that next level out of my comfort zone????
If you don't take different actions you'll never get different results.
And if you only know what you know how can you possibly take the different actions, you have to know that information first to use it. Am I messing with your head yet?
So I stepped up, I was brave and I asked my coach for his advice and an eating plan to help lift my butt for the summer. I then put that straight into action.
Anxiety Is Hard
I know what you're thinking, "But that's different, anxiety is harder, and it can be crippling." And I agree! Anxiety is hard and it can be crippling but there are things in life that if you were to know, would affect your entire life, including any anxiety and any training or eating problems.
So here they are,
The 3 Reasons Why What You Know Already Is Holding You Back
1. You know your version of the truth
What you know is your beliefs and experience and not necessarily the truth. What you don't know is there are such things as limiting beliefs, these are beliefs that are created and reinforced which do not help us to move on from things such as anxiety. It can be very hard to spot our own limiting beliefs, and much easier for others to point them out for us (because they don't feel like beliefs they feel like the truth).
Let's take that annoying neighbour. You know they make you feel stressed, you know it's their fault you have anxiety. What if that was a belief and not the truth of the situation? What if there were a different way to look at it that is way more empowering for you? Who's responsible for how you feel? Just in case you are not sure, it's you, you are responsible for yourself and that includes how you feel. The raw truth is, you have decided that they stress you out (yes their behaviour may be unacceptable, but you decide how you cope with that behaviour). I know, it can be hard to comprehend. You only know what you know, right?
2. Your Thoughts come naturally, you're not trying to worry
You know your thoughts are not helping the anxiety, you might even beat yourself up because you know this. Yet you can't quite manage to stop or change those thoughts, which creates extra pressure and more overthinking of what's wrong with you. You know you have irrational thoughts and most of what you think will not come true, but that doesn't help either.
What you don't know yet, is that your thoughts are created by your thinking styles.
We all have thinking styles, or cognitive distortions if you want the technical term. It is these thinking styles that we use to translate the world around us. So if you wake with a sick feeling in your tummy, instead of taking a minute to think what may have caused that feeling, or simply ignoring it as it may go away after you've had a wee, no, you immediately think the worst. It's because I'm anxious, it will be there all day and my day is now ruined!
This is a combination of black-and-white thinking, focusing on the negative and catastrophising, all very common thinking styles seen in people who suffer from anxiety.
3. You know it feels really bad when anxiety or panic hits
Because you know anxiety feels really bad you naturally want to avoid that feeling. So you may start to decline activities, take different routes that avoid that bridge or U-turn, or decide that staying home will be more relaxing than socialising with your friends.
This is how your life starts to shrink and people become agoraphobic (fear of leaving your home) but it also reinforces to your mind that these activities should be avoided and when they are you feel better. This is keeping you stuck in anxiety as you get less and less resilient to feeling uncomfortable.
