Why Can't I Get Rid of My Phobia?

Phobias, have you ever wondered why some people are scared of some things and others aren't? We are born with only two fears, being dropped and loud noises, which means every other fear or phobia has been created along the way.

And the good news is that if we create it, we can eliminate it.

But what if you don't want to stop experiencing the phobia? What?? Who doesn't want to get rid of something that makes them scared? Well, you'd be surprised, but a lot of people hold on to fear and phobia for very good reasons, read on to hear what they are...

  • Positive Reinforcement

You know when you give a dog a treat or a stroke to stop them barking, or you give a child a toy in a shop so you can concentrate, yes, we've all done it. Well, this is reinforcing negative behaviour, and what it does is it tells the unconscious mind that if they do X, then they will get rewarded, either with something physical or emotional, like love or attention.

  • Significance

There is such a thing as the 6 Human Needs, you'll have heard it if you have attended any of my courses. Four of these needs are fundamental and we are all meeting them every day whether we know it or not (scary).

Significance is the one that may be stopping you from letting go of a fear or phobia. Does that phobia make you a little unique? Are you the only one you know who has it? Do people comment about it and make a big thing of it? Who would you be without that fear?

  • Fear of letting go

Some people simply can not get their heads around letting go of the fear. Maybe they have always been scared of spiders, flying, buttons, wet plastic (don't laugh I feel gaggy just typing it) and they can't imagine not feeling uncomfortable in its presence.

Or maybe the phobia is something that they 'should' be scared of, heights, sharp knives, death, driving on motorways... because there is a real threat of dying. How will you stay safe if you let go of the fear? Quick answer, if someone else has done it (and many are not scared of those things) then you can too.
