5 Ways Anxiety is Costing You Money & The Life You Deserve

5 ways anxiety is costing you money and the life you deserve

Did you realise there are 5 ways that anxiety is costing you money and the life you deserve? Yes, it’s true. You may think you can’t afford to get help for anxiety and you need to wait for free help from the NHS but the waiting lists are years long and can you afford to wait?

You may not think anxiety and money go hand in hand, but they do, and in the next few minutes I will show you exactly how your anxiety and overthinking are costing you money and the life you deserve.

You might be a teacher, a nurse or a freelance painter and you’re thinking I do my job because I love it and I love helping people, but I know it doesn’t pay well, so there is no point reading on. Hold on there!! Before you go, let me ask you to stretch your imagination just a little broader and while we’re at it, how about you think where else in life do you have such set opinions and rigid beliefs?

It is exactly these set-in-stone expectations and beliefs that are adding to your anxiety and overthinking. Luckily, I know some things about you. You are also very determined, quietly more than in people’s faces, you have high expectations of yourself (and sometimes of others if we’re honest) and when you understand something you’ll achieve it.

So if you understand how your anxiety is costing you money as well as a good night’s sleep, then you can start putting things in place to make those all-important changes. I know you don’t like change, but you’ll love these ideas because they’ll bring you more money and opportunities to allow you to live your life your way – we all want that!

Here are the 5 ways your anxiety is stopping you from having money

  1. Your anxiety is all-consuming

When your anxiety raises its ugly head, it is front and centre of your attention, how could it not be? It makes you feel awful, and you’ve always got to be 500 steps ahead to ensure everything is fine so you don’t start shaking in front of the boss or completely melt down at an inappropriate time or place. (Is there ever an appropriate time or place, hhmmm, maybe that’s why you stay home more these days…)

As you know already, in your job you need to be on the ball. You have responsibilities and people depend on you, but when a large part of your thoughts are preoccupied with how you’re feeling and if you’re actually going to be sick or why is your heart beating out of your chest so badly, what’s wrong with you??? Then only a fraction of your mind is actually on your work.

Whoa, imagine how unstoppable you would be if you were able to stop overthinking and get on!

  1. Self-doubt is a killer

Even the most confident people can be crippled with self-doubt after a bout of anxiety. The sheer unpredictability of anxiety does that to a person. You can’t work out what exactly is triggering you, you seem to be anxious morning noon and night for no apparent reason, so frustrating because again, you’re a productive person and if you just knew you’d fix it!

Not to mention the physical effects of anxiety! It is very hard to trust yourself when you can’t even trust your own body to behave and do what you want it to do.

It is no wonder that your confidence has taken a knock and you are now second-guessing your decisions in all areas of your life. Not good, especially as indecision leads to procrastination and can bring you to a complete standstill.

  1. Overthinking

This brings us smoothly into overthinking. Have you ever had a great idea and then second, third and fourth-guessed yourself? I thought so. Overthinking is a killer of creativity and money! You have these flashes of inspiration, and before you can act, the “What Ifs” creep in and fill you with so much trepidation over it that you come to the conclusion it’s not worth the risk of running with it.

Just imagine if you’d taken that leap of faith with any or all of those bright ideas, fortune favours the bold is a saying for a reason.

Now please don’t start beating yourself up, you overthink for a very good reason. Your brain is geared up to keep you safe, so if it believes that you will experience the root cause (the real ultimate reason you experience anxiety in the first place) your mind will bring up a million reasons, good reasons, why you can’t do that: keeping you safe. Skint, but safe. Comfortably kept down, but safe. Unhappy, but safe.

  1. You don’t move up your career or make big changes

Bringing me back to my initial point in this article, you may have strong beliefs over what is and is not possible. Every person who struggles with anxiety they all have one (or a few) things in common, you have all-or-nothing thinking.

This is a thinking style that is often unnoticed until someone like me points it out, and can therefore go undetected for years, even generations as it can be passed on. Yes, if you are a little stuck in your ways, or have quite definite ideas of what’s right and wrong, then chances are so are your parents.

It is this thinking style that makes your physical symptoms of anxiety escalate and sometimes doubt that your anxiety can ever be fixed. It is black and white with no shades of grey let alone colour!

It is for this reason that you may not go for that promotion or dare to leave the career you’ve been in for 20 years, it’s all or nothing, it’ll either work or it will go horribly wrong, there are no other options.

  1. You are wasting your money trying to forget

Anxiety is simply awful; I think we can all agree on that. It can strip you of your confidence and make you feel like you are losing your mind. It can stop you from doing ‘normal’ things and special things such as going on holiday or enjoying family BBQs.

So it is no wonder that so many people use outside influences to attempt to not feel anxious or to try and forget about it.

Hands up who has had to have more than a few drinks just to be social at the work party? I still don’t think I’ve lived those days down (cringe).

It’s not just alcohol that’s used to numb the pain, drugs, both legal and illegal, porn, prostitution, online shopping, ordering Ubers and Uber Eats to avoid people or shopping, paying for an extra seat so you do not have to sit next to someone, wasting money by not attending things, and simply misplacing or mis calculating money because you couldn’t think straight!

Not to mention all the cheer-me-up food and takeaways, it all adds up.

But paying for help feels like a waste of money? Maybe start to add up all the money that is spent emotionally and notice when you are spending it.

Is this a habit that you are happy to be in? Maybe life doesn’t need to be so black and white, maybe the shades of grey are closer and more obvious than you first thought.
